Hurricane Katrina Information: Virginia's Response to Hurricane Katrina
Richmond - Law enforcement officers and equipment from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, the Virginia State Police, Chesterfield County Police Department, and Henrico County Police Department deployed for Hancock County, Mississippi, on Tuesday, September 20, 2005.
Through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) at the request of the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the multi-jurisdictional task force assisted state and local law enforcement with security and various law enforcement missions. The multi-agency response team consisted of 10 game wardens with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, 22 Virginia State Police troopers, 10 Chesterfield County police officers, and 5 Henrico County police officers. The State Police also sent one of its command post vehicles. The first group was replaced after two weeks by a second wave of Virginia officers.
Hancock County is the southwestern-most county in Mississippi, bordering both Louisiana and the Gulf of Mexico. This will be the first deployment for the multi-jurisdictional task force to provide assistance to a region suffering the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina.
