Alcohol remains the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents. In 2019, there were 128 deaths and 279 injuries as a direct result of boating under the influence; foregoing alcohol or drugs is the safest way to enjoy the water. ODW is a national outreach and enforcement campaign focused on educating boaters about the dangers of boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs. |

The Coast Guard has withdrawn the Certificate of Approval (160.037/23/0) for NAMMO LIAB AB Orange Smoke Hand Distress Signal, and the approval status of this certificate is now marked as "Former- Do Not Use." Datrex Inc., of Kinder, LA, is the only distributor for these products in the United States. Any signal manufactured after October 2013 must be properly disposed of and replaced with a product that satisfies the vessel's carriage requirements. |

Garmin Issues Mandatory Software Update for GHP Reactor Autopilot Series

Garmin has recently discovered a software issue on GHP Reactor autopilots. This issue may cause the autopilot to perform poorly, up to and including making the unit inoperative. In rare circumstances, the autopilot may behave unexpectedly, possibly performing abrupt maneuvers, although no such behavior related to this issue has been reported from installed systems. |

Marine Safety Alert issued for Navigational Lights

The U.S. Coast Guard is concerned about the sale and availability of unapproved recreational and commercial vessel navigation lights. Purchasers of such lighting should be aware replacement lighting may be improper for its application due to the failure by manufacturers to meet technical certification requirements. Furthermore, technical advances in marine lighting, such as the use of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), rope lighting, underwater lighting, and other various types of decorative lighting, may violate navigation light provisions of the Nautical Rules of the Road. |

Kidde recalls plastic valve disposable fire extinguishers

A faulty valve component can cause the disposable fire extinguishers not to fully discharge when the lever is repeatedly pressed and released during a fire emergency, posing a risk of injury. This recall involves 31 models of Kidde disposable fire extinguishers with Zytel black plastic valves. The recalled extinguishers are red, white or silver and are either ABC or BC rated. Composite tanks have been very popular with cruising boaters and Rivers since they are lighter than metal tanks, are rust-proof, and are translucent so that one can see how much propane is left in the tank. This recall is for only composite tanks made by Lite Cylinder (10#, 20#, 25#, 33#) due to increasing failure rates (leaking), among other problems cited in the notice. |
